  • If made from 100% pure cornstarch (very rare): These may be biodegradable but not compostable in a meaningful or timely way. Pure cornstarch is brittle and not water/oil resistant—so it’s rarely used on its own.

  • Most cornstarch clamshells are actually made from blends, such as:

    • Modified starch + PP (polypropylene) → NOT compostable

    • Starch + PLA or other bioplastics → May be industrially compostable if certified

    • TPS (thermoplastic starch) with synthetic additives → May biodegrade, but not compostable and may leave microplastics

• If the cornstarch clamshells you’re sourcing don’t come with BPI, TÜV Austria, or EN 13432 certifications, they are most likely not compostable—even if marketed as “eco-friendly” or “biodegradable.”
